Natural sciences and social economical consequences: climate change
The climate is changing worldwide. What are the causes, and moreover the consequences? The earth is capable of causing climate fluctuations, so to what extend are they caused by humans? At our faculty ‘climate’ is a concept that strongly connects the different associated research groups.

Earth scientists try to explain past climate changes on earth, so we can predict what awaits us in the future. Biologists study the effects of small climate changes on plants and animals in their (natural) habitat. Geo-environmental scientists and (eco-)hydrologists study the human influence on the water cycle or the local climate caused by deforestation or, on the contrary, reforestation of land. Environmental scientists and earth economists study the social economical consequences of the changing climate: should we continue to live in areas where floods are to be expected?
Cooperation between these scientists makes the faculty one of the world’s leading authorities in the climatological field.
