Juliette Legler named as FALW teacher of the year 2012

Juliette Legler, teacher of Ecotoxicology, was presented with the Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences Teacher of the Year Prize on Tuesday 27 March, during the Faculty Education Day.

The Teacher of the Year Prize is presented annually to a teacher who has shown real dedication to improving the quality of teaching within the faculty. Legler will now represent the faculty in the university-wide Teaching Prize, which will be presented at the opening ceremony for the academic year in September 2012.

All the Programme Committees within the Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences were given the opportunity to nominate a colleague for the Teacher of the Year Prize. The Student Council then conducted interviews with all those nominated and chose Juliette Legler as the winner. Legler’s nomination has the whole-hearted support of the management and senior teaching staff within the faculty.

Juliette Legler was nominated by the Ecology Programme Committee because of the effort and enthusiasm with which she has taught Ecotoxicology and Environmental Quality, a course within the Master’s degree course in Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology (ECT). This is a new specialization within the Master’s degree programme in Ecology, which Legler has set up with the University of Amsterdam. Next year, ECT will be taught within the Amsterdam Graduate School of Science (AGSS). The Programme Committee also praised Legler for her enthusiasm: “She can explain things very well and her friendly and informative style always make her classes interesting. She is an enthusiastic professor who knows how to keep her students interested and is exceptionally committed to her field of study.”

Legler’s versatility and enthusiasm also came across clearly from the Student Council. These qualities were held in very high regard by the students. “During her classes, Legler regularly uses interesting, real-world examples. Students are sometimes so impressed by these that it often takes a while before she can carry on with the lesson. Legler also finds it very important to give her students personal attention. Despite the cutbacks, she makes sure that students get plenty of guidance and personal feedback. She uses postdocs where necessary, and she also redoubles efforts where appropriate.”
