Professor Integrated Nitrogen Studies

Jan Willem Erisman has a background in environmental research, especially the atmosphere – biosphere exchange of gases and aerosols related to acidification and eutrophication and climate change, both scientific as well as policy development and evaluation studies. His work has focuses on optimizing food production and energy use while minimizing the environmental impacts from increased nitrogen cycling. Until 2012 he led the unit Biomass, Coal and Environmental research of the Energy research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) with about 90 scientists working in the field of environmental research, research on biomass pre-treatment and conversion technologies, liquid and gaseous products from biomass, carbon sequestration and environmental reduction technologies. Currently he is CEO of the Louis Bolk Institute (, an institute with 45 professionals providing international advice and research on sustainable agriculture, nutrition and health care. He was Chair of the European Science Foundation programme Nitrogen in Europe (NinE; (2005-2011) and is a member of the Scientific Committee and project officers (Treasurer) of the International Geosphere Biosphere Program (IGBP; He is a member of the Health Council of the Netherlands.
He is professor at the VU University Amsterdam on Integrated nitrogen studies. Research focuses on the interaction between nitrogen and climate, the use of satellite data to improve nitrogen exposure and deposition and on the improvement of nutrient efficiencies in agriculture and energy use to improve the environmental quality (estuaries, seas and oceans, air, human health, biodiversity and ecosystem services)
