About me

I am Sunu. I come from Yogyakarta, Java, Indonesia. I graduated as a Master of Science on coastal ecology at the Department of Systems Ecology of VU University in 2007. Now I am a Ph.D. candidate here under the scheme of a ‘sandwich-program’ supported by the Netherlands Fellowship Program 2010 - 2013 (NFP-Nuffic). I conduct my research in the Segara Anakan mangrove forest in Java, Indonesia under supervision of Prof. Dr. Rien Aerts, Dr. Peter van Bodegom and Tjut Sugandawaty Djohan Ph.D. (of the Faculty of Biology, Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia). I am grateful to get the opportunity to conduct a study on mangrove ecosystems in Indonesia, since this has always been my dream. Viva mangrove.

My research project

My research project is in the Segara Anakan (SA) mangrove forest located in Cilacap, Java, Indonesia. The SA mangrove forest has suffered from fresh water influxes of Citanduy River combined with high sedimentation and from illegal logging that threatens the sustainability of both mangrove vegetation and its fauna community.
The aims of this study are (1) to examine the impacts of downstream sedimentation and fresh water fluxes on the turnover of primary production and leaf litter in mangrove forests, (2) to examine the roles and the interactions of macro-invertebrates in the turnover of mangrove primary production; and (3) to look for solutions to conserve the valuable functions of this ecosystem especially as breeding, growing and feeding zone for commercial marine fish species.
