Research Activities

Research activities mainly focus on physical processes related to groundwater hydrology. Recent activities included investigations of:

• The contribution of compaction of deep clay layers to current subsidence in coastal areas; 
• How far outflow of fresh groundwater can extend into the offshore and;
• How fresh groundwater bodies become saline by free convection phenomena during periods of sea-level rise. Current research topics include
• The use of subsurface temperature measurements as a tracer of groundwater flow, climate change and land-use change and;  
• The osmotic behavior of clay layers in groundwater systems. A new direction of research focuses on the use of the noble gas composition of groundwater as a tracer of the origin of groundwater.
