Sedimentology & Marine Geology
Department of Sedimentology

The central theme of our research is subsurface prediction of sedimentary rocks and their properties. The research output is meant as input to the study of hydrocarbon reservoirs, of aquifers, and of subsurface pollution. Our credo is that subsurface prediction is optimized by blending insights from depositional concepts, such as facies models, with information from remote imaging techniques such as reflection seismics and ground radar. Consequently, the group combines work on controls of depositional systems with work on petrophysical properties of sedimentary rocks and their seismic interpretation. We specialize in reefs and shallow water carbonates but work also on siliciclastics and (hemi)pelagics. Currently, the regional spread of our activities includes the Netherlands and northern France, the French Alps, the southern Alps of Italy, Spain, Egypt, Oman, southern Russia; finally, we are participating in marine work in the Mediterranean and the Bahamas.
