Tectonics and Structural Geology

Department of Tectonics and Structural Geology

The Tectonics/Structural Geology Department (TSG) of the VU University Amsterdam is devoted to the quantitative understanding of deformation processes in the Earth from the deep lithosphere to the surface and in their interaction with other phenomena such as climate.

Members of the TSG Department are active in field data acquisition with different methods ranging from field work to seismic acquisition.

Own and acquired data are processed using state-of-the art techniques and tools. Numerical and analogue modelling work is used to investigate fundamental Earth System processes and to quantitatively integrate acquired data. The goal is to produce geo-predictions in non-accessed spatial and temporal domains.

Research work at the TSG Department is both process- and regional oriented in the conviction that the understanding of regions is of crucial importance for societal needs and to constrain models. Work at TSG Department is strongly integrated with that of other disciplines within and outside the VU University such isotope geochemistry, Sedimentology etc.

The TSG Department ascribes major importance to the education of Master as well as PhD students. These are fully integrated in the research activities of staff members and post-docs. There is a very international environment at the TSG Department with students, post-docs and staff members coming from several European and non-European countries.
