Courses

Courses in the bachelor programmes Biology, Biomedical Sciences, and Health Sciences given by staff of the department

Major undergraduate courses (in Dutch)

Methodology in biological research (4 wk)  Methodologie en onderzoek in de biologie
A 1st year course for biologists, in which the cycle of biological research is illustrated and the principles of experimental design, experimentation, statistical analysis and presentation are taught.

Evolution and diversity of life (8 wk)  Evolutie en diversiteit van leven
Basic course in the 1st year of biology, addressing evolutionary theory, origin of life, population genetics, heritability, cladistics and speciation, as well as the evolution of body plans illustrated using botany and zoology dissection practicals.

Ecology, humans and nature (8wk)  Ecologie, mens en natuur
1st year course in the Biology bachelor's programme, teaching the principles of ecophysiology, population ecology and biodiversity, including faunistic and floristic field knowledge, illustrated by a variety of excursions.

Regulation and defence in animals (8 wk)   Regulatie en afweer bij dieren
Course of animal physiology (2nd year Biology), including physiological experiments, histology practicals, parasitology and immunology.

Coastal and marine ecosystems (8 wk)   Kust en mariene ecosystemen
This course, in the 2nd year of the biology programme, covers the principles of community ecology, illustrated by coastal ecosystems, including field work at a foreign marine station.

Evolutionary ecology and behaviour (4 wk)  Evolutionaire ecologie en gedrag
2nd year optional course in the Biology programme, illustrating the principles of behavioural ecology, with field work on a remote island.

Human development and evolution (8 wk)  Humane ontwikkeling en gedrag
A 1st year course in the bachelor Biomedical Sciences, illustrating principles of developmental biology, evo-devo, phylogenetics, and the evolution of the human body plan.

Environment and health (4 wk)  Gezondheid en milieu
Course teaching the principles of environmental toxicology, given in the 2nd year of the Health Sciences bachelor programme.

Human diversity and evolution (4 wk)  Mens en evolutie
Course for 2nd year Health and Life students, illustrating principles of population genetics, cladistics, speciation and human evolution.

Courses in the minor Evolutionary Biology and Ecology (in English):

Ecotoxicology (4 wk)  Ecotoxicologie
Teaching the principles of fate and effects of chemicals in the environment.

Human Evolution (4 wk)  Evolutie van de mens
Illustrating the phylogeny of the hominins, with a bone practical and an excursion to a neanderthal excavation.

Evolutionary genetics (4wk)  Evolutionaire genetica
Dealing with mechanisms of genetic change, molecular evolution and principles of molecular phylogenetics.
