Institute for Geo- and Bioarchaeology

The Institute for Geo- and Bioarchaeology, founded in 2003, is a multidisciplinary research group applying analytical methods from the Earth and Life Sciences to archeological problems and questions. Research is grouped in four important themes, namely Archaeometry and Materials Sciences, Landscape Archaeology, Prospective Archaeology, and Heritage Policy and Conservation. Furthermore, the Institute provides teaching for the BSc and MSc courses in Geoarchaeology.

Mission

The core activities of the Institute for Geo- and Bioarchaeology consist of the development, preservation and exchange of knowledge in the fields of the historical past (i.e. archaeology), and of knowledge about the conservation of archaeological heritage, the primary source of information about the past. These core activities are concentrated on the overlap between the natural sciences, in particular the earth sciences and biology, and the cultural sciences. Co-operation with both commercial and scientific organisations in the national and international archaeological infrastructure as well as with leading institutes in Natural and Earth Sciences is a defining factor in the inter- and multidisciplinary character of the Institute, thus profiling itself as an international expert centre for scientific archaeology.
