Expertise
Annelies Koopman has a MSc-degree in Geoarchaeology and a BA-degree in Archaeology, specialisation Syria and Mesopotamia. She has substantial field experience in the Middle East ( Jordan, Syria) and North Africa (Egypt), and specializes in research on the interface between earth sciences and archaeology.
Currently Annelies performs a PhD Research that aims to contextualise the Neolithic surface archaeological record in the Fayum Basin, Egypt, in order to understand the relationship between regional climatic shifts, duration and timing of Neolithic occupation in the depression, and development of earliest agriculture in Egypt. The study will lead to a new methodology to study the geomorphic contexts of surface archaeological records in the Eastern Sahara that can be tested elsewhere. Research is part of the UCLA/RUG/UoA Fayum Project, an international research group that involves close cooperation between the University of California in Los Angeles, the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen in the Netherlands, and the University of Auckland in New Zealand.
Recent Projects
- Fieldwork in Weipa, Cape York Peninsula, Northern Queensland, Australia (3 weeks in August and September 2011). Participation in a geoarchaeological project that involves close cooperation between Rio Tinto Alcan, the University of Auckland in New Zealand, and the Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia.
- Fieldwork in the Fayum Basin, Egypt (4 weeks in November- December 2010) in preparation of PhD-Research.
