Expertise

Adriaan de Kraker specializes in historical geography and climate reconstruction. Historical geography focuses on how the interaction of man and nature has effected the evolution of the landscape during the recent 3,000 years. This interaction deals with the changing land use, the history of dike building, coastal defence and water management. He has published several books and papers on the reconstruction of parts of the landscape in Zeeland, in which he showed how the interaction man – nature can be assessed. Knowledge of landscape evolution on a longer time scale is important for archaeological research and present environmental management. Climate reconstruction focuses on the study of written sources of the recent 600 years and how their climate signals or proxy data can be used to reconstruct elements of past climate such as temperatures and storm frequency. These proxy data are connected to the instrumental data which start in the 18th century. He has developed a method to asses the impact of storms during the pre-instrumental period and showed how Dutch and Belgian tithe records can be used as temperatures indicators for pre-instrumental periods.
