Expertise

Jan Verhagen has a background in Biology (Drs. 1975) and Archaeology (MA, 2012, specialisations medieval archaeology and Roman-period archaeology).
His key interests are:

  • Physical Geography of the Rijn-Maas systeem
  • Roman period infrastructure
  • Historical Geography
  • Archaeology and Heritage
  • Medieval fortifications
Jan Verhagen is working as a PhD candidate within the interfaculty research institute CLUE (VU University) in collaboration with the Province of Gelderland on a research project about the Roman waterworks in the Rijn-Maas delta. Although in a period of more than four centuries a lot has been written about the canal and dam of Drusus, these major works never have been identified in the field. Even an overview of the literature is lacking. The aim of the research project is to make a step forward by making a literature review, to analyse the research of the past, to make a comparison with the canal of Corbulo and Roman canals in other countries, to develop a theory-based concept and evaluate methods for new and future research.
In 2007 Jan Verhagen has been favoured as “Ridder in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau” because of his role in the voluntary archaeology for many years.

Recent Projects

  • Medieval castle of Zevenaar. Excavations in 1984-1987 and 2008-2009 revealed the remains of a castle with a brick outer wall of nearly five meters thickness. This marks the end period of medieval castle building. Because of the building of a underground car park a reconstruction has been made of the foundations of this castle with information panels and other visualisations as a heritage project.
  • Regional cooperation on archaeology in the Arnhem region. By the municipality of Arnhem in collaboration with the Province of Gelderland a three year pilot project has been developed, with the appointment of a regional archaeologist.
