Expertise

Martine van den Berg specializes in hydrology, water management and archaeological heritage management. She conducts research on the relationship between hydrological processes and the preservation of buried archaeological sites and artefacts. Change in conditions of the burial environment can cause deterioration of valuable archaeological artefacts and materials. She is trying to make archaeologists more aware of the necessity of proper water-management and research on and around archaeological sites.
Currently she is writing a PhD thesis on water management, hydrology and the in situ preservation of buried archaeological sites. The main goal of this study is to contribute to a risk assessment system to evaluate threats coming from changing environmental conditions induced by changing water management.
