Introduction
Maartje Poelman is a PhD student at the institute of Health sciences at the VU University. Maartje’s research project is entitled: Portion Control at home; the development and evaluation of a comprehensive intervention program aimed at portion size to prevent overweight and obesity.
Academic training:
Bsc Nutrition and Dietetics (clinical dietician) (2003-2007)
Msc Health Sciences; Prevention and Public Health (2007-2009)
Research Project:
A strong factor influencing (an excessive) energy intake is food portion size. Research showed that food portion sizes have increased during the past decades. Numerous studies have proved that people’s energy intake increases when being offered a larger portion. Effects of at least 30% higher consumption levels due to portion size are reported frequently with larger effects for larger portion sizes.
This research project will contribute to the development of an innovative intervention to prevent overweight and obesity. The portion control program combines behavioural strategies with micro scale environmental strategies; it uses self regulation techniques, and pays attention to the forming of new habits. The effectiveness of the portion control intervention will be studied in a Randomized Controlled Trial with a usual care control condition.
