The Athena Institute is a young and growing institute. It consists of two departments: Dept. of Biology and Society and Dept. of Science Communication.
The Department of Earth Sciences focuses its research on the understanding of the Earth as a coupled system with emphasis on interaction within and between the geo-, hydro-, bio-, and atmosphere.
The Institute of Ecological Science covers all aspects of terrestrial ecology, from molecular ecology to ecosystems ecology in which both plants, animals and micro-organisms are studied.
The Institute for Geo- and Bioarchaeology is a multidisciplinary research group applying analytical methods from the Earth and Life Sciences to archeological problems and questions.
The Departments’ activities are devoted to public health, i.e. the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organised efforts and informed choices of society, organisations, public and private, communities and individuals.
The Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) aims to contribute to sustainable development and the rehabilitation and preservation of the environment through academic research and training.
The mission of the department of Neurosciences is to contribute to world-wide efforts aimed at establishing a new, integrative neuroscience, rooted in molecular biology and genetics and extending all the way to behaviour, emotion and cognition. In view of its crucial role, emphasis will be on synaptic functions essential for the various levels of brain organisation.
